Nicene Creed

The Nicene Creed with Scriptural Support

The Nicene Creed, established in 325 AD and later refined in 381 AD, defines key Christian beliefs, with scriptural foundations. Let’s go through it point by point, aligning each section with relevant Bible verses

The Nicene Creed was intended to affirm core biblical teachings, though different denominations may interpret its phrases differently.

1. One God, the Father Almighty

"We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible."

2. Jesus Christ, the Son of God

"And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, begotten of the Father; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father."

3. Christ’s Incarnation

"Who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man."

4. Christ’s Crucifixion & Resurrection

"He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried, and on the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures."

5. Christ’s Ascension

"And ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father."

6. Christ’s Return

"And He shall come again with glory, to judge the living and the dead, whose kingdom shall have no end."

7. The Holy Spirit

"And we believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son."

8. Worship and Glorification

"Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified."

9. The Prophets

"Who spoke by the prophets."

10. The Church

"We believe in one holy catholic* and apostolic Church."
* Catholic meaning "one, universal" church, not Roman Catholicism.
